Night & Day

Posted on Fri 10th Feb, 2006, 3:39pm

ISO: 100, Shutter speed: 1/100, Aperture: f/5.6,
Camera: Canon EOS 20D, Flash: None, Cropping: None,
Lens: Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 EX DC, Focal length: 18mm,
Captured: 8th February 2006, 3:57pm,

I took this from the roof of the Media Centre, which is next to the building I work in. It was the first decent sky for bloody ages around here and I'm quite happy with the result.

I was going to do this in colour but when I started playing around with the black and white conversion it just looked so much better.

The main thing I wanted to capture in this was the long shadows coming from the tables and benches on the grass at the bottm. When I took it, I didn't really notice the shadows on the highrise buildings but I think it adds to the photo.

And yes, that is the moon at the top, which is the other thing I was trying to capture.

A great almost unreal feel to that one, very good indeed :)

Cheers everyone. Danielle - the Photoshop work was basically levels (whole image), colour correction (whole image), cloning to remove some distractions at the bottom, dodge & burn on the grass at the bottom, curves (sky only, masked) and then convert to B&W using channel mixer and sepia colouring

Looks like each tower block is puffing out its very own little cloud. Nice shot and great tonal range.
